We get a lot or requests for repairing rotten fascia boards.

On older homes the gutters are usually attached by the spike and ferrule method. This method allows water to get into the fascia boards and causes them to deteriorate. Clogged gutters can also cause damage to the fascia board as they overflow. Another situation that causes damage is when the water goes behind the gutters from a damaged roof or roofing that does not have adequate overhang.

One way to protect the fascia board is to install drip edge. Drip edge is metal installed under the first course of shingles and turned down into the gutters. This prevents any water from going behind the gutters when the shingles don’t have adequate overhang.  

 Another way to prevent damage to the fascia board is to make sure the gutters are tight. This may include installing new hidden hangers with wood screw fasteners. If the spikes are working loose you can always install the new hidden hangers and use screw fasteners with rubber washers to pull the gutters up tight and eliminate any gaps between the gutters and fascia boards.

 Fascia boards and gable ends can be capped with aluminum. The aluminum trim coil comes in many colors. The pre-painted material has baked on enamel that resists fading, cracking or peeling. When you wrap the fascia boards and cap the gable ends it not only helps protect the wood from moisture, it also eliminates any future need to paint.

 It’s very important to keep gutters clean and functioning properly. Clogged gutters can cause damage to the fascia boards, and allow water run-off to overflow in certain areas damaging landscaping or foundations and concrete.
